How to recognize parcels and mail bombs

There are currently many occurrences of book bombs sent by unidentified sources. Be aware if you receive the letter or package with the following characteristics, they might have an explosive device inside:

  • Unexpected or unsolicited mail, both domestic or foreign
  • Excessive weight for its size
  • Rigid envelope
  • Lopsided or uneven envelope or package
  • Excessive securing material
  • Protruding wires, string, tinfoil, etc
  • Oily stains or discoloration
  • Strange smells
  • Excessive number of postage stamps
  • Restrictive marks (‘personal’/’private’ etc)
  • Handwritten or poorly typed address
  • Source unknown; no return address
  • Incorrect titles or titles with no names
  • Misspelling of common words
